AMONG THE REMAINS

At the table at home, silence was woven.

In the 70's, the slogan circulating in the streets was “Silence is health” which affected an entire society that wasn´t allowed to talk about certain things.

The words contained were the ones that impelled me towards an imperious necessity of saying.

Almost a decade ago, when my mother died, something stopped. I felt that those things never said were hidden under the tablecloth.

I had a dream where I covered, tied and gagged a cup with a white cloth napkin. I woke up and began to wrap and sew tableware, a simple action that became a ritual. The remains of everyday objects out of use, mute and inert witnesses of a time of our existence, are mummified between napkins and white tablecloths, which I continue adding and superimposing on innumerable layers.

Layers of silence. Layers that keep stories that will no longer be told.

The scars and the anguish of what was never said, remain.

A past concluded. A present without words.

The space of Las Salitas at OSDE Foundation was part of the prestigious English furniture store which exhibited tables, spread with their tablecloths and tableware in order to be acquired by the public and to become part of the private lives of their buyers. Lives that through time, stitched on each one of these common objects, their own history.
